Entertainment is provided by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with variable timing on both cams, which helps pump 120 horsepower and 112 pound-feet of torque. On paper it does not sound much until you see fluttering 2,600-pound running weight. Careful choice of leverage at the five-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with the engine in its sweet spot and is doing reasonably peppy acceleration, particularly if you wring it out to the redline when the engine really shines. It is the only engine at launch, and the only thing Ford will talk about, but we’ve already seen spy shots of what appears to be an EcoBoost model tests outside Dearborn, so we hope a more powerful model is underway.

The five-speed manual is a good box with accurate throws, although they are rather long, but we hear Ford Racing is already working on an aftermarket repair. The big news is in the automatic, which Ford claims world’s first fully electro-mechanical gearbox, which eliminates the need for hydraulic pumps and oil coolers. On the way, it’s an impressive piece of technology that offers smooth shifts regardless of engine speed and recognizes sporty driving, where it holds gears longer automatic.

If you want to have some real fun, though, the castle in L. Traditionally stands for Low, about Ford’s latest automatic transmissions that actually represents the “lowest possible gear with the current speed.” On the way, it means the transmission will hold a gear all the way to redline and even leave it if you release the gas. Conversely, it will also drop to a lower gear as soon as it is safe for the engine to give you as much power as possible. Out on Auto Cross, this function proved quite brilliant, always calling gear needs right on cue.
