cars : Will the Honda CRZ catch on in the US as it has in Japan?carscars With Honda CRZ frames showrooms next year, and it leaves me wondering and excited to see how well this “sporty” hybrid will make here in the States. It was released in Japan early this year and has met with positive reception. The new CRZ are light weight, two seat, and boasts 38 mpg. The main part that will appeal to the sporty crowd, the addition of a six-speed manual gearbox, a first for any hybrid. Honda is known for quality, very smooth transmissions and this one should be no exception. And the interior is not half bad. Pretty similar to the current generation Civic Si and I love the use of white, which increases the futuristic yet eloquent style.
Well thats all nice, lets get to the most important part in creating a sporty car engine. It will be powered by a 1.5 liter four-cylinder with VTEC and integrated motor assist. This means that the actual gasoline engine will produce 111hp at 6k rpms and 108 lbs of torque. But the electric part of the engine will give it a boost to 122hp and 128 lbs of torque and a very nice 1k rpms which means good response at low rpms. If I just showed you these engine specs you would never expect that this is associated with a sporty car. But I think it is combined with a six speed manual gearbox and a lightweight body, it will be a very fun car to drive. Its not all about how many, its about driving experience. Since this is supposed to be like the original CRX with regard to its advice capability, light weight and easy tuning, it will be received in the same manner in the tuning community? Well Honda closest tuning company, Mugen, has already addressed the CRX and plan to give them their own character. As you can see they are planning on tweaking the body, giving it a more aggressive body kit and rear wing. You see, the most interesting part of modding these new hybrid cars is to see what they will do with the electronic part. Mugen plans to upgrade the electric motor that would give the car plenty of low end torque and increase responsiveness which will allow them to focus on increasing top end power gasoline engine. Spoon is another popular Japanese tuning company that specializes in Hondas. They are also well on track to make their own changes to the CRZ. They have set their own spoon CR39 wheels and coated them in their signature color with front coilovers and springs and shocks in the back. They also have upgraded brakes with 15 inch slotted rotors. To make the CRZ even easier to have added a carbon fiber hood, mirrors and front lip. They are also tweaking the ECU to get a few extra horses. So its unclear whether the CRZ will change the hybrid tuning community as has happened in Japan, but I still think the CRZ will do very well in the States. Honda has a huge fanbase, and I think something new from them with the word “sporty” will catch on with the 20-30 years old. We just have to wait until the CRZ launches again next year to see what it has in store. 2010 5.12 Posted by Troy Bautista CATEGORY Auto Honda Hybrid Import Tuning Write comment With Honda CRZ frames showrooms next year, and it leaves me wondering and excited to see how well this “sporty” hybrid will make here in the States.
