Japan’s auto industry appears to be turning a corner after posting its worst sales in 38 years in 2009. New vehicle sales, including mini-vehicles grew by 24% year on year (yoy) in March to 674,494 units, which took the total sales for the year ending March 31 to 3.182mn, up to 10% annually. But there is much reason for enthusiasm in the industry, as this marks the fifth-lowest sales on record and compares with a particularly low base from the year before, when the recession was at its worst. Incentives have also played a big role in inflating vehicle sales. Calendar year sales for 2009 actually show a decrease of 9.3% per year, as tax cuts on cars purchases were not introduced until April, with subsidies, low-emission vehicles added in June, leading to an increase in sales in the last half of the year.

BMI does not consider that level of growth achieved in FY10 is sustainable because it was so heavily driven by incentives. The Japanese market is very saturated in the wild and the withdrawal of incentives will only aggravate stagnation. Given that our forecasts are based on calendar year results, our projections really think positive, because we expect an increase in sales in 2010, although less than 1%. But for the remainder of the five year forecast period, we think it will be difficult for car buyers to outperform average annual growth of 2 %.

Saturation of the market includes Japan, in fourth place in BMI’s business environment ratings for autos sector in Asia Pacific with a overall rating of 61.1 from a possible 100. While the country scores well in terms of its country risk, with low levels of corruption and a sound legal framework, which has bumped up the total market score, automotive nearing full capacity and thus reduces output growth potential, while the high priority vehicle owner restricts possible sales growth. Labour costs are too high, which increases the cost of expanding production.

March sales also hinted that Toyota Motor has not suffered significantly from its withdrawal on the domestic market. Toyota retained its lead in the market, with sales excluding mini vehicles, up by 53% annually in the month, while sales for the year rose 15.3% to 1.534mn units. Were also questioned the quality of the Prius hybrid is offset by the ‘green car incentives that make the hybrid model of its best selling car for the 12 months ending in March. Suzuki Motor’s small car WagonR was knocked into second place for the first time in five years, while Honda Motor’s Fit small car was third. The first serious foreign competition in the alternative fuels segment can be expected from General Motors Company, which intends to launch its Chevrolet Volt in the next two years.
