I saw my very first episode of Knight Rider last night.

Half of my friends will give me the “Oh my god you are such a baby!” Speaking next time I see them. In my defense, I had no control over my time of conception or birth date - you’ll have to take it up with my parents. I was born a year after Knightsbridge Rider debuted, and it went live after only four. I somehow managed never to catch a syndicated episode of the show or any of the many spin-offs will, re-dos, or films made since. Complete transparency: I’ve never seen Fried Green Tomatoes, Star Wars, or any of the Godfather movies in their entirety. There are more, but I will stop before your head explodes.

So, Knight Rider. The episode I was lucky enough to be on was “Good Day at White Rock”, where The Hoff saves a town from the big bad biker gang. And let’s just get it out of the way right now: David Hasselhoff rocked that show like no business. I’m not so much a Hoff fan but credit where it’s due, right? So bad 80’s t.v. yesterday that he was black with people.

[I wrote the previous paragraph, before I had a Google image search, where I took a picture of The Hoff on, stark naked, surrounded by Shar pei puppies. I'm not even going to try to link to it from here, else the horror of it sucks my blog in some bizarre black hole time warp. I will let you open that box depending on your own if you dare .]

So right, Knight Rider. What I really was super cool about the show was not the Hoff, or the bad acting or drama of Grandeur. What I found really super-cool was KITT, the talking car. First and foremost, K.I.T.T. was snarky as hell, which I found quite endearing. More importantly, he did not really need the Hoff all. He could have saved the city of White Rock all on its own, but for some reason decided he needed a mortal human to tag along. Since this is the only episode of the show that I’ve seen, I have no idea how the Hoff and KITT got together in the first game - but they did and here we are.

Even though I was only -1 in 1982, I can imagine that the idea of a talking car was totally sci-fi crazy. I think it is a car! and it speaks! to a person! That is some crazy stuff, man. But here in 2010, talking cars is not exactly revolutionary. We’ve got GPS, and Ford Synch and Hover Craft, for the love of Knight. We talk to our cars and our cars talk to us. Although I have not run across a technology that can handle the volume of the Snark that KITT handed, I am sure it is not so far away. Actually, what the potential of our cars will do for and with us in the future seems almost Jetson-like. Want your car in your briefcase? Do not mind if I do.

My boyfriend Jake, since the hybrid computer / car geek, he is always finding new and exciting ways to combine the two technologies. First it was a stationary under the seat, so a 7-inch touch screen mounted in the dashboard, and now an elegant and discreet IPAD dock located in front center console. I would never have thought to have a full-on computer in the car before I met him, and now it is as normal as . It does not speak with us yet, but it’s only a matter of time before he finds a way to do that greet us with one and pour us a cup of coffee in the morning.

KITT, as strange as it seemed at the time was really just an anticipation of the coming world. Of course it is such with most things, is not it? People have ideas, other people call them crazy, and then someone actually invents something. Who would have expected that we would be going around with a whole library of books in a single 10-ounce device? Certainly not me, had you asked ten years ago. I am constantly surprised at where we are today, when I look back at where we were not so long ago. What was once futuristic has now completely real, and the things that seem futuristic to us today does not feel quite as impossible as they once did.

It’s not 1982 anymore, ya’ll. World is our shellfish, snarky world savings cars and all.
